Nicky Brodie

I first met Nicky in Ottawa upon returning from a winter in Florida.  I wanted to put a musical group together that resembled no other band, and with Nicky as the lead vocalist we managed to achieve a new recipe for a group.  We used  Digeridoo,  Synth Chapman stick,  guitar, tabla and drums.  Everyone who was lucky enough to hear Rhoizamatta  in it’s short life span,   knew they were hearing something totally unique.  Nicky’s performance is full of theatrical stage presents as she draws on her experience as an  singer,  songwriter,  actress and model.   Nicky comes to Canada from London England where she performed with Billy Bragg.

My good friend,  writer  Joanne John,   asked me to put music to a lyric that she wrote a few years back.  When I was working on this project,  Joanne reminded me of this unfinished song and so I set it to the music that you hear here.  Tim’s sax intro and solo sets the mood  for this sultry song that nicky,  another quick study,  delivers with her unique style.

I wrote this song when Nicky and I had a band in ‘96 called Rhoizamatta,  an unavoidable rush of sound.   Back in those days we didn’t have a keyboard so Nicky was quite surprised to hear Mark’s piano accompaniment.   This arrangement is just the way I wanted to hear it and when Nicky came up with her background siren song it transformed the piece into something even more beautiful.   Hugh O’Connor plays a thoughtful and soulful, moving flute solo followed by my guitar solo played on my 1972 Pat Lister classical guitar.  This is a sweet sounding ax  and is still a favorite.
