Folk sounds from a distant land
Soft as a summer breeze, hard as the frozen
ice, wild like a tsunami, tamed as a cherry blossom.
Aki’s love for the traditional music
of her homeland is reflected in her heartfelt vocals heard captured in it’s purest live recording.
Aki and I worked from September 01 through the winter until spring 02 recording her live shamisen and vocals
of some of her favourite folk songs along with some new original songs like Frog and Moon, written by her good friend.....
translated into english by aki and arranged by me.
Aki was born in a small fishing village on Shodoshima,
a small island in the Inland Sea of Japan. As a young girl, she had weekly piano lessons and developed a secret passion to
become a musician thanks to her grandmother who was always singing folk songs.
Aki began to study the three-stringed
Tsugaru Shamisen and folk singing in Kyoto and was able to make the acquaintance of other musicians like her, who were trying
to keep this traditional music alive. Since moving to Canada two years ago, she has continued to share her music with audiences
in a wide variety of venues ranging from street performing to local festivals such as The Tulip Festival and The Ottawa Folk
Festival.
